Microchip Releases Industry’s First 24G SAS/PCIe Gen 4 Tri-mode Storage Controllers into Production – Jan. 12, 2021

Server OEMs and cloud operators designing storage platforms for next-generation data centers need to deliver significantly higher performance through PCIe® Gen 4 x16 CPU interfaces and support for the latest NVMe™ SSDs and 24G SAS infrastructure. Microchip (Nasdaq: MCHP) today announced production release of the first products to deliver these capabilities; the Smart Storage PCIe Gen 4 Tri-Mode SmartROC (RAID-on-Chip) 3200 and SmartIOC (I/O Controller) 2200 storage controllers also provide proven security and manageability features for the most demanding server storage applications.

SCSI is a technology that has been superseded by a myriad of other interface standards. The great number of devices that it supported was taken over by cheaper and better alternatives. IDE took over as the preferred interface between hard drives and motherboards. Small Computer System Interface: A small computer systems interface (SCSI) is a standard interface for connecting peripheral devices to a PC. Depending on the standard, generally it can connect up to 16 peripheral devices using a single bus including one host adapter. SCSI is used to increase performance, deliver faster data transfer. SCSI, short for Small Computer System Interface, is a set of standards for physically connecting and transferring data between computers and peripheral devices like hard drives, tape drives, scanners, CD drives, etc.

Let’s get ready to rumble!

In one corner, we have Cameron Brett, president of the SCSI Trade Association and Director of Enterprise and Cloud Storage Marketing at KIOXIA America, representing Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). The 30-year market incumbent, SAS is the dominant storage interface used in enterprise servers and storage deployments in data centers.

In the other corner, we have Jonmichael Hands, NVM Express™ Marketing Workgroup co-chair and Sr. Strategic Planner and Product Manager at Intel representing the NVM Express interface. NVMe is a high-performance and latency-optimized protocol built from the ground up for non-volatile memories deployed on a PCI Express® bus. NVMe SSDs are the up-and-coming challenger for data center dominance.

Refereed by Don Jeanette, Vice President, TRENDFOCUS, this lively discussion will cover an overview of each interface and punch down into the benefits and features of each. Is there enough room in the data center for both? Or can there be only one?

About this Webcast
As a follow-on to our popular SAS 101 webcast titled “The Most Widely Deployed Storage Interface,” we’re excited to present a deeper look into Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), a scalable serial interconnect that moves data to, from, and within storage devices and systems. The expert presenters with decades of experience in the storage industry will discuss the benefits of SAS and the recent enhancements designed to reach new application performance levels. No one can deny that SAS has set the bar with its inherent scalability and flexibility in modern data center, server, and storage topologies. In this webcast, you will learn about recent evolutions in SAS enterprise features including 24G SAS and what they mean to system designers:

  • 2.4 GB/s effective single-lane bandwidth (22.5 Gbaud rate)
  • Unmatched Scalability and Reach
  • 20-bit Forward Error Correction for more robust reliability
  • Enhanced transmitter training algorithm for better signal integrity
  • System-level manageability
  • Fairness enhancements for performance consistency across protocol topologies

“24G SAS: What’s New and How to Test It” Webcast

Driver

STA hosted this webcast on March 18, 2020 covering 24G SAS, a concise summary of changes in SAS-4 and tips on how to test new features, including:

  • “Packet-Mode” Structures
  • 24G Link Training
  • Forward Error Correction (FEC)
  • Active Phy Transmitter Adjustment (APTA)
  • Persistent Connections
